<image:title>Blog - Are you incompatible, or is avoidance sabotaging your relationship? - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Imagine the possibilities that can unfold when we say “yes” to innocent bids for connection. Reflection Question: Was there a time when fear caused a tiny rupture or confusion that impacted the trajectory of your future interactions? Deciding Whether to Stay or Leave Are your values incompatible, or is avoidance sabotaging your relationship? One of the most common questions clients bring into therapy is: “Should I stay or leave this relationship?” These questions arise when evaluating all types of relationships: colleagues, partners, friends, collaborators. Sometimes the answer feels clear. Often, it doesn’t. Clients often find themselves wondering: • Are we fundamentally incompatible? • Is this a values mismatch? • Is my partner emotionally unavailable? • Are attachment patterns getting in the way? • Is there a way to heal what’s happening between us, or is this relationship no longer healthy to invest in? These questions are difficult because the behaviors we see on the surface don’t always reveal what’s happening underneath. Sometimes repeated relational difficulties truly reflect a mismatch in values, and sometimes they’re rooted in attachment patterns or avoidance. Sometimes they’re influenced by neurodivergence, relational trauma, anxiety, life circumstances, or other protective strategies. And sometimes it’s a combination of several factors. Challenges rooted in avoidance can have very different origins and motivations than genuine incompatibility. Sometimes avoidance shapes behaviors and thought patterns so convincingly that they feel completely real and justified to the person experiencing them. Before deciding whether to stay or leave, it can be helpful to understand what role avoidance may be playing. Because sometimes people simply haven’t been given enough authentic relational data to accurately know the person they’re trying to understand. They’re left wondering: “Is this someone whose behavior I simply don’t respect?” “Are they okay hurting people or behaving unprofessionally?” “Are they capable of gaining real, embodied, in person relational data?” “Are they emotionally unavailable?” “Is there actually a deeply routed other pathology at play here?” “Are they just playing games with my mind? Do they actually mean what they say? Why is the narrative shifting every day?” “Or are avoidance patterns sabotaging their ability to show up in the relationship?” Figuring out the route cause of disconnection is challenging, so people naturally begin creating narratives to make sense of what they’re experiencing. So what makes connection so difficult for some people to stay in? Let’s first explore what avoidance is, what causes avoidance behaviors, how they sabotage relationships, and how to distinguish them from a genuine values mismatch. ⸻ What Is Avoidance? Avoidance can encompass behavioral patterns, situational protective strategies, or deeply rooted attachment patterns. There is an important difference between deeply rooted avoidant attachment and situational avoidance. Deeply Rooted Avoidant Attachment Deeply rooted avoidant attachment is often entrenched and tends to appear across different contexts and all types of relationships. People with deeply rooted avoidant attachment often learned, through early relational and developmental experiences, that closeness was unsafe. Over time, those experiences shaped nervous system pathways that associate intimacy with danger rather than safety. Many people with avoidant attachment genuinely desire love and connection, yet find themselves repeatedly pushing others away before intimacy develops. Their thoughts and internal narratives become intertwined with their nervous system responses. When closeness increases, they may begin engaging in distancing or “deactivation” strategies such as: • flaw finding • deactivation strategies • triangulation as reinforcement rather than accountability or direct conflict repair • emotional withdrawal These strategies are sometimes unconscious, happen quickly, and often emerge when intense feelings arise within relationships. Some people experience significant anxiety, panic, dissociation, or emotional overwhelm as intimacy increases. Distancing strategies temporarily reduce that discomfort while reinforcing the belief that distance is necessary. Unfortunately, many people with deeply rooted avoidant attachment delay seeking therapy and may initially attribute relationship difficulties primarily to the other person rather than recognizing how avoidance behaviors contribute to the relational cycle. They may also struggle to recognize how their avoidance impacts their partner. ⸻ Situational or Protective Avoidance Not all avoidance reflects an avoidant attachment style. Many clients develop protective avoidance after experiencing one or more painful relationships with an avoidant partner. This can look like: • Not texting back right away because you don’t want to appear “too eager.” • Purposely staying single or turning down dates even though you crave connection. • Acting cool, detached, or aloof while privately feeling anxious and longing for reassurance. These behaviors often develop after relational trauma, where the core fear is abandonment rather than engulfment. Sometimes people find themselves adopting some of the same distancing behaviors they experienced from a previous avoidant partner. ⸻ Other Causes Situational Avoidance?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Are you incompatible, or is avoidance sabotaging your relationship? - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Notice something important happening here. The avoidant partner often struggles to fully turn toward the other person, even though their protective strategies may have a profound impact on the relationship. Notice how the arrows of avoidance repeatedly return to the self. Instead of curiosity about the other person’s experience, avoidant partners often subconsciously ask themselves “Am I safe? How do I reduce my discomfort? How do I escape shame? How do I stop feeling overwhelmed?”. Meanwhile, the other partner’s attention often turns toward the avoidant person- trying to understand, reconnect, or make sense of what’s happening. Even when the avoidant person is open enough to think about the other person, their organizing principle is often their own nervous system and the need to reduce internal distress. This is one reason avoidant protective strategies are sometimes mistaken for narcissism or selfishness. When someone repeatedly withdraws without explanation or repair, it creates an information vacuum that can be incredibly confusing for the other person.</image:caption>
